A Lesson Learned About Second Hand Phones

One of the aspects of the N70 blogger program is to recycle the units and send the returned “review” units out after making sure all prior data has been removed.

The idea of recycling the units and having other bloggers get a chance to experience the Nseries had been a positive experience for many, providing a foundation for comparison between models, a chance for niche bloggers to experience the Nseries and overall generating a positive, good will effort. Given the experience with the units to date, the Nseries phones for the most part the units have proven to be sturdy and additional reviews, comments and awareness were generated as well as valuable feedback that has helped refine the program.

Unfortunately, one of the recycled units had an unreported, undetected and unknown defective camera lens. This likely was a result of prior handling, or may have been damaged in transit, but there is no real way to tell. But unlike some we don’t look at this as a negative, as it revealed something to us. This occurrence proves that the secondary market for mobile devices is not likely a viable one and that consumers should be wary of second hand phones that they may consider purchasing. With new mobile phones coming to market so quickly, and the opportunity to buy a near new model so tempting, this case reveals why the second hand market isn’t a wise choice for those expecting perfection.

We are actually appreciative of Osuma’s review and his efforts as it helps to point out one of the perils of buying second hand phones vs. new from the factory. In today’s era mobile phones are more than just phone, and in a time where it is easy to sell previously used or owned electronics consumers have to be wary. Unlike the automotive industry, there isn’t a pre-owned certification program for mobile phones.

One of the reasons for having a blogger relations program is to gain insight and feedback in an early warning system manner. Obtaining the kind of insight that we received from Osuma is exactly what is needed in an ever changing business marketplace, especially with consumers, and why programs like this are so important. As a result we are going to cease sending recycled units out to second and third round bloggers.

Consider this a point proven and a lesson learned on all fronts.

I hate this has some very well thought out comments on some aspects of the N70 that they don't like in this comment.

    But we like this comment:

Overally, my Nokia N70 is ok. Sometimes. When I don’t think of how good it could be if not for all those nasty minuses. I don’t hate Nokia N70, but I certainly hate particular things about it.

We appreciate the love, from Hate :-)

Alan Reiter Starts With His N70

I'm expecting real strong opinions both pro and con from Alan Reiter, one of the real veterans at reviews of camera phones and handheld devices. Alan has been around for a long time and his expertise on the subject is almost unequaled.

Alan just joined the Nokia Blogger Relations Program, due to my own oversight as I've always thought of him more as a reviewer, not a blogger due to how long I've been reading him from time to time. He's one of these guys you need to read when you want honest views on cell phones and camera phones.
